Robison Helicopter Humble Beginnings

Robinson HelicopterOver the years, Robinson Helicopter Company has received tremendous growth. One of the leading factors that have contributed to its growth in personal aviation is its innovative technology. Also, the excellent leadership from Frank Robison, who is the founder, has contributed much to the company’s success.

Historical Background

Frank Robinson had a great interest in helicopters at a young age. He was born in 1930 in a family of three siblings who grew up under so many hardships. Turning nine, he came across a Seattle post-intelligencer photograph that showcases his dream career. The picture featured a helicopter legend Igor Sikorsky expertly hovering over his VS-300 prototype helicopter.

The technological inventive behind the engineering genius who would build such a machine was a puzzle to Frank. He drew inspiration from that and promised to establish a profession involving helicopter design and creation.

Educational Background

Frank enrolled at the University of Washington. He specialized in helicopter design and graduated in mechanical engineering. During his college years, he would participate in several jobs, which made him take more time on campus, a total of nine years compared to a four-year course. After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Wichita to undertake an aeronautical engineering primary majoring in helicopter design.

His zeal to advance in his career was much higher and unstoppable. While still in college Frank Robinsons would find extra time to explore his passion for aviation. He learned to fly airplanes comfortably, and he managed to buy three different light planes during college. Finalizing his engineering degree, frank Robinson had already acquired his private pilot license and a commercial evaluation.

Achievement

Frank Robison started his small helicopter expertise as he applied for mechanical engineering opportunities at different aircraft manufactures. He earned an opportunity at Cessna, where he gained extensive knowledge in helicopter design. Working at Cessna allowed him to work at a succession of rotary-wing manufacturers, where he gained his helicopter ratings. He landed a job at Hughes Helicopters in 1969, where he conducted numerous research and development projects.

In 1973 Frank Robinson was ready to fuel his vision to design and create affordable personal-sized helicopters. He established the Robinson Helicopter Company.
