CSR is a policy of ethics to reduce the negative impact a business has on the environment and to operate in a socially responsible way. Boris Ivanov Gazprom said not enough oil companies unfortunately just do the bare minimum rather than looking to really make a difference in the communities in which they operate. Oil companies don’t want to face criticism when addressing pressing issues, but they let this deter them from really making an impact.
Whether at Gazprom or GPB Global Resources, Boris Ivanov has considered it a privilege to have the opportunity to make a positive impact on individuals and communities. He takes his company’s CSR mandates seriously as a result. He listens to local communities and determines ways to better engage them, including building political and social support for this company’s projects.
Oil and mineral extraction can be very disruptive to communities that are agriculturally-based. It’s for this reason that it’s critical to show communities how the disruption can bring about positive differences. He points to infrastructure, education, and economic development as positives. These areas have seen little investment so all three of these are critical issues.
GPB Global Resources has been supporting local projects in Ethiopia since 2014. They began exploring for petroleum in this country that year and so started to address needs such as medical training, food security, education, and water access. An example of this is helping two communities plant 1,000 trees. This was part of a larger effort to have 1,000 communities in Ethiopia plant trees.
Boris Ivanov says his company hires local people to provide jobs and stimulate regional growth. Many people in Ethiopia are unemployed or working poor. His company employs over 4,000 people in Africa. These employees have local ties and so help his company better address a region’s real needs.
