James Dondero Founder Of Highland Capital Management
James Dondero is responsible for all the business and investment activities taking place at Highland Capital Management. He has over three decades of experience and during his leadership, the firm has grown and expanded. It started by being focused on high-yield credit and has now moved into other areas. This includes private equity, real estate as well as other alternative segments and special situations.
President and Chairman
Mr. Dondero also has the role of president and chairman of NexPoint Residential Trust, Inc. This is a publicly-traded real estate investment trust (REIT). He also has the additional role of being chairman of CCS Medical, Inc., NexBank Capital, Inc. as well as Cornerstone Healthcare Group. He also is a board member at Jernigan Capital, Inc. and MGM Holdings, Inc.
Philanthropist
Known as a very dedicated philanthropist, Mr. Dondero is active with supporting education initiatives, public policy as well as veterans’ affairs. He is also a member of the Executive Advisory Council of the George W. Bush Presidential Center and serves on the Executive Board for the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business. Protective Life
In 1993, before James Dondero founded Highland Capital Management, Mr. Dondero was also active in creating Protective Life’s GiC subsidiary. In this company, he was the chief investment officer. His work enabled the company to grow from its creation to a value of more than $2 billion from 1989 to 1993.
Mr. Dondero held a position as a corporate bond analyst from 1985 to 1989. He then went to American Express where he was a portfolio manager. In 1984, Mr. Dondero started his career at J.P. Morgan working in the position of an analyst in their training program.
Mr. Dondero is a graduate of the University of Virginia and attended the McIntire School of Commerce. There he received the school’s highest honors. He earned dual majors in finance and accounting. He is a Certified Managerial Accountant and has obtained certification as a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Dondero has also earned the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst.
