New Fortress Energy Joining GE to Towards Clean Energy
On the 13th of October 2020, Long Ridge Energy Terminal made an announcement about its plan to move to carbon-free hydrogen on its 485 MW combined-cycle power plant. It will be in partnership with New Fortress Energy & GE Gas Power. According to New Fortress’ CEO, Wes Edens, the company intends to roll out carbon-free hydrogen from the beginning of next year. Hydrogen will be blended in the gas stream and gradually switch the plant to producing green energy for ten years.
The Long Ridge plant will be the first of its kind in the United States and globally to blend hydrogen in an H-class GE gas turbine. The GE 7HA.02 turbine they are using has an initial capacity to burn 15-20% and move to 100% with time. According to a recent Bloomgberg interview, Wes Edens believes that clean energy technology is the path to evolving sustainability. New Fortress Energy is bringing in its new division, Zero, which focuses on investment and adoption of technologies in hydrogen production to meet zero carbon emissions.
The Zero division, under Wes Edens, will also play a part in the production of cheaper hydrogen. Long Ridge remains among the most efficient power plants in the United States. Its innovations are ensuring that customers get so-demand, resilient and reliable power-driven by hydrogen. The company is well-positioned for testing the product due to its proximity to the industrial byproduct hydrogen, the Ohio River, and enough storage facilities.
