How Gordonstoun is Impacting Future Debates
Watching our television screens, you can’t help but notice how political debates have been on the rise especially with Brexit and the Covid-19 Lockdown.
And these debates demonstrate the need to mentor future leaders on coming up with the best solutions in addressing anticipated challenges.
Because of this, Gordonstoun established the Dialogue Society, to change how learners debate by listening to all the arguments before settling on the best solution.
About Gordonstoun
It is an independent boarding school based in Moray, North East of UK. It was started in 1934 by a Jewish exile who ran from Nazi Germany, Dr. Kurt Hahn. It welcomes learners from different countries and backgrounds, to educate them well so that they contribute to society in the best way possible.
Importance of Gordonstoun’s Dialogue Society
Society encourages empathy to understand everyone’s views when settling a dispute. The institution believes that it is very much possible for a common agreement to be reached even for people with different views.

It is nurturing the coming generation to have good debating skills, which are necessary for future careers and come in handy when it comes to negotiating and making decisions.
Educating students in the UK
Even though Gordonstoun is mentoring its students, it knows that is not enough to motivate entire generations to take part in healthy debates. Therefore, it has started free dialogue symposiums for UK students.
The first symposium dialogue was in 2019 and the students were lectured by James Smith, a Gordonstoun teacher, on strategies to successfully resolve conflicts.
The next symposium was in March 2021 and it was held virtually because of Covid-19 restrictions. In this one, Mr. Smith talked about listening to all perspectives before resolving a dispute.
This second symposium even featured members from the Handforth Parish Council after their disagreement in a previous meeting.
Feedback
The symposiums have been praised by the students, with some of them even including the events’ details in their applications for university places.
