Min-Liang Tan: Lawyer To CEO

Min-Liang Tan was originally a lawyer who graduated from the National University of Singapore Law School. He quit his job as a lawyer in 2005 to co-found a gaming company called Razer. His partner Robert Krakoff wanted to have more time gaming and hoped to invent a mouse that would give gamers improved precision and speed while playing.

They went on to create their best product, the Boomslang mouse. Since then, they have offered several products, including many other gaming hardware and software platforms made especially for gamers.

Tan and his company have produced face masks during the pandemic to help with the coronavirus relief efforts. Tan has also applied for a Razer Inc banking license.

Tan, born in Singapore but lives in San Francisco personally oversees the design and development of all the company’s product line. Tan works long hours but doesn’t seem to mind.

The Razer CEO said in a recent interview is quoted as saying, “We very rarely look backward. What has been constantly ahead of us is what is the next thing we can go for. I think, for us, it is how can we get to that next side level.”

Their motto or slogan is “by gamers, for gamers,” has definitely paid off for Tan. The self-made billionaire and CEO of Razer compared management to a real-time strategy game in which he gets to decide what to do wherewith his resources.

Since forming such a large global company, Razer Inc has sold millions of gaming laptops, fitness bands, Boomslang mice, and tablets.
