Orphanages were for taking care of orphans and children separated from their parents. The purpose changed to become a business-making entity for many. Many parents give up their children due to poverty, disability, or emergency reasons and get a promise of their children acquiring the best health care and education. Once these children get into these institutions, they are introduced to heavy labor, beaten by the directors, and denied access to education. They miss the food and may get sick due to the consumption of polluted water. Some orphanages’ directors post images of malnourished children on the internet to get funds from the donors. Once they get donations from well-wishers and volunteers who intend to help children, they use it for personal gain. In Haiti, about 760 orphanages are accommodating thirty-two thousand children. Some of the institutionalized children have one parent or relative. Children in some of these institutions have their rights violated; they don’t have access to education, health, and even social services in society.
Young girls are drugged, sexually assaulted, and even used in filming pornographic videos. Researches have proven that raising children in orphanages harms their development, health, and life chances seriously. Children need consistent adult care, which they can only get from their families. Suppose orphanages run well; they still can’t replace the love children get from their families. The inadequate childcare is because the number of children keeps on increasing, overwhelming the care providers. You will find that one person is taking care of twenty to forty children. Therefore, the child’s interaction time with the caregiver is minimal. The child is negatively affected in the future, and he/she will not be able to interact with the people in a society once they get out of these institutions. Due to many negative impacts brought by orphanages, many developed countries have abandoned them. They have come up with a better alternative of helping the needy families to ensure they bring up their children. They have already witnessed positive results because children now appear healthy and happy. Georgette Mulheir, a global strategic advisor, also advocates for a family bringing up children. She has rescued thousands of children and reunited them with their families. She has also started global movements to expose what children go through in orphanages.
